Guide to buying a new boiler

When it comes to boilers there’s an awful lot of choice. There are different manufacturers with multiple models and sizes. Then there are all the companies competing for your custom promising they can fit it better, faster, cheaper.

But when you invest in a new boiler the benefit isn’t that you’ve got a shiny new object hung on your wall. You buy a new boiler because you want:

A warm house and a reliable supply of hot water.

Lower energy bills.

A reduced impact on the environment through energy efficiency.

An easier to operate system with controls that are effortless to manage.

Peace of mind that you’ll not be stuck without heating and hot water.

So when a company jumps in with boiler suggestions and prices without finding out about your needs ask yourself-  do they really understand my home? Will they really solve the problem I have?

Combination Boilers

A combination boiler supplies both your heating and hot water in a single unit without the need for a hot water storage tank. They are more efficient as they produce hot water on demand instead of pre-heating a large cylinder that could go to waste. They’re ideal in flats and smaller family homes where there isn’t space for a header tank.

If you’ve got more than one bathroom or multiple jet showers a Combi boiler won’t be able to supply enough hot water on demand as they’re designed to supply one outlet at a time.

System Boilers

A system boiler contains all the components for heating and hot water within the boiler but the hot water is stored in a cylinder. This means there will be a plentiful supply of hot water for multiple outlets.

A system boiler is a closed system that only requires a boiler and a cylinder, whilst a regular boiler requires header tanks in the loft to feed the hot water cylinder and to maintain the water level in the radiators.

Because a system boiler is a sealed system, it benefits from condensing technology. This means that energy is recycled from the exhaust gasses to preheat the cold water, making the system even more energy efficient and helping to reduce your home’s CO2 footprint and reduce your environmental impact.

Conventional Boilers

A conventional boiler is also sometimes called a regular boiler or heat only boiler. This type of boiler uses hot and cold water storage tanks, usually installed in your home’s loft. These boilers have the ability to send the hot water to multiple taps at once without a loss of pressure or the flow getting weaker. Conventional boilers send hot water to your radiators and a separate hot water cylinder for storage. They are a good option if you have a high demand for hot water with multiple bathrooms to supply.
